What is Coffee Chat?
We're convinced that you'll do your best when what you're learning directly connects to your own interests and everyday life. That's why we've designed our Coffee Chat English sessions to be laid-back and stress-free, so you can focus on what really matters. In this relaxed setting, you'll have the chance to dive into discussions that truly interest you and relate to your real-world experiences, all the while learning English. This approach is designed to not only boost your performance in the short term but also help you remember what you've learned for the long haul. Our goal is to make your learning experience not just enriching, but incredibly effective, ensuring that what you learn sticks with you and proves useful in your daily life.
What is the process?
Prior to your lesson: Before your first session, you'll fill out a form on our "Contact Us" page. Here, you'll share some details about yourself, the reason you're learning English, your CEFR level, and your learning goals. This information helps us tailor the lesson to your specific needs, offering you a more personalized and effective learning experience.
Trial lesson: If we determine that you're a good fit for our program, you'll be invited to book a trial lesson. During this session, you'll meet with Kelsey to identify if we can meet your educational needs and establish a customized learning plan. This trial lesson serves as a diagnostic tool, enabling us to further refine the content and teaching methods for your benefit.
Standard lesson: In the regular classes, you'll have the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, explore new vocabulary, participate in role-playing exercises, among other activities. Feedback on your spoken fluency is provided in real-time, allowing you to instantly correct aspects like pronunciation, rhythm, or intonation. This immediate feedback enhances your learning in multiple ways, from enabling quick adjustments to boosting your confidence and engagement.
FAQs

The style of lessons that I teach require that students’ speaking and listening abilities are B2-C2. Key abilities the student should have are:
Speaking: Students should be able to express themselves on familiar topics and engage in conversations, providing simple explanations and opinions. They should be able to handle basic social interactions, such as ordering food, asking for directions, and participating in discussions about everyday life.
Listening: Students should understand the main ideas and relevant details in conversations, announcements, and presentations related to familiar topics. They should be able to understand information in simple, clear, and predictable language.
This focus allows me to provide advanced content and higher-level language skills. Because of this, my lessons might be too difficult for beginners or those at A1-B1 levels.

The type of English I teach is sociocultural conversational English.
Sociocultural conversational English teaches learners how to communicate effectively in everyday situations while also being mindful of the traditions and social norms unique to English-speaking cultures. The focus is on practical language use in real-world settings, as well as understanding the subtle cultural and social cues that influence communication. The ultimate goal is to equip learners with the skills to have smooth and authentic conversations in English, while also broadening their understanding of various cultural backgrounds. By achieving this, learners are better positioned to feel comfortable and form genuine relationships in English-speaking environments.

The teaching methods that I incorporate are:
Student-centered Education: Student-centered methodology puts the focus on the learner's needs, interests, and goals, making education more relevant and engaging for them. This approach encourages active participation and critical thinking, as students are often tasked with solving real-world problems or leading discussions. As a result, not only do they gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter, but they also develop important life skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and self-directed learning.
Interactive Education: Interactive education engages students in active participation through practical exercises and discussions, enhancing both the learning experience and the retention of knowledge. It also builds skills like critical thinking and teamwork.
Authentic Pedagogy: Authentic pedagogical approaches emphasize a well-rounded, interactive educational experience that extends beyond mere academic knowledge. Through storytelling, role-playing, and debates, it nurtures emotional and social aptitude, benefiting both personal and professional life.
Culturally Responsive Pedagogy: Culturally responsive pedagogy is an educational approach that acknowledges and values the diverse cultural backgrounds of students. It promotes inclusive teaching methods that recognize and respect students' cultural identities, while fostering an equitable and engaging learning environment for all. This pedagogy not only enhances learning outcomes but also prepares students for a diverse and interconnected world.
